An audience comprising of UAlberta students, staff, and faculty, in addition to the community, heard an engaging presentation from High Commissioner Swarup entitled “The New India.” For an hour the audience learnt about the changes and evolution of India’s economy and society – India is now the fastest growing major economy in the world, with a dynamic, educated, and youthful population. Following the presentation, there was a lively question-and-answer session touching on many themes from the presentation.

Dr. Mathias Ruth, UAlberta’s new Vice President (Research), gave welcoming remarks at the event.

About the High Commissioner

High Commissioner Swarup has more than 30 years experience in the Indian Foreign Service and most recently served as spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs before being appointed as High Commissioner to Canada in 2017. In addition, His Excellency is the author of three novels including Q&A, which was adapted as the multiple Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. His books have been translated into more than 40 languages.
